SPRINGFIELD — Sophomore Alyssa Beckett (Monroe) shined for the Ohio Northern women's soccer team on Thursday evening, leading the Polar Bears to a 2-0 victory over Wittenberg at Edwards-Maurer Field.
After what marked both teams' season-opener, Northern improves to 1-0-0 while the Tigers fall to 0-1-0.
Beckett, who ranked third on the team in goals last season, was responsible for the entirety of the Polar Bears' scoring on Thursday.
The ONU defense also proved stingy, holding the Tigers to zero shots as senior goalkeeper Becky Moss (Lebanon/Mount Notre Dame) tallied her first career shutout.
Both of Beckett's goals came late in the first half, and the first was assisted by junior Kylie Cabana (Dexter, Mich.).
She first found the back of the net with just over eight minutes remaining in the period and added her second with 5:33 left before halftime.
The Polar Bears attempted just four shots in the second half but continued to hold the Tigers without a shot over the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout.
Northern finished with 15 shots in the game and held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday for their 2022 home opener against Hanover (Ind.) at 2:30 p.m.
