MARIETTA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a bang Saturday afternoon, scoring a 1-0 victory over Marietta at Marietta Field.
The victory improves the Polar Bears to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play while dropping the Pioneers to 1-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the OAC.
After a scoreless first half, the teams remained deadlocked as the end of regulation neared.
But, with just under seven minutes remaining, ONU sophomore Jill Roberts (Bellbrook/Carroll) found the back of the net on an assist from freshman Elizabeth Pierce (Liberty Township/Mount Notre Dame) that ended up giving the Polar Bears the victory.
Marietta was able to get off just one shot — Taylor Sloan missed high with just under a minute left — for the remainder of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Kristy Catrine (Springboro) made one save in the game for ONU, which out-shot Marietta by a 26-3 margin, including 11-1 in shots on goal.
Freshman Alyssa Beckett (Monroe) attempted a team-high six shots in the game to go with five from Roberts and four from Pierce.
The Polar Bears also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Marietta's Katie Delaney played 83 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and made 10 saves.
The Polar Bears return to the field on Wednesday when they host OAC foe Baldwin Wallace at Kerscher Stadium at 7 p.m.
