Reed clinches All-America honors for third consecutive season, leads No. 12 Ohio Northern on first day of 2024 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

ADA — Junior All-American and No. 1-ranked Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) clinched All-America honors for the third consecutive year to lead No. 12-ranked Ohio Northern on the first day of the 2024 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday.

The Basics

- Friday's sessions were sessions one and two of four. Session three will be Saturday morning at 11 am EDT and the final session will be at 8 pm EDT on Saturday evening.

- Junior All-American and No. 1-ranked Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) advanced to the championship semifinals at 141 pounds for the second consecutive year, posting a 2-0 record on Friday.
- On Friday afternoon, he won his opening match by major decision 8-0 over Bobur Berdiyorov of New England College (N.H.).
- Reed then defeated No. 8-seed Evan Burge of Wabash (Ind.) by decision 9-2 to ensure All-American status on Friday evening.
- He will now face No. 5-seed Josiah Gehr (Messiah) in the semifinals on Saturday morning. He has guaranteed himself no worse that a sixth-place finish.
- Reed is now 28-0 on the year and is 11-2 in his three NCAA Championships appearances.
- Junior Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) finished his tournament with an 0-2 record at 165 pounds.
- He lost his opening match on Friday afternoon to #2 Nicholas Sacco (College of New Jersey) by major decision, 14-2.
- Hendricks then fell by fall to Shawn Marchesano (Ursinus) in the consolation second round Friday night in 2:40.
- Hendricks finishes his outstanding season 27-10 on the year.
- Junior Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) went 0-2 at the tournament at 184 pounds.
- He lost by decision in his first round match 5-0 to #5 Sean Malenfant (Alfred State) Friday afternoon.
- Layman was eliminated by Joel Martsinovsky of Stevens (N.J.) in the consolation second round on Friday night by fall in 4:40.
- Layman ends his terrific season with a 34-12 record.

- Reed is making his third NCAA III Championships appearance. He placed third in both his freshman and sophomore seasons, earning All-America honors both years.
- Reed won his second consecutive NCAA III Central Regionals crown after placing second as a freshman in 2022.
- He is now 115-6 in his career.
- Hendricks is making his first NCAA Championships appearance after winning the 2024 NCAA III Central Regional title.
