Women's Lacrosse roars back from 8-3 deficit to post 15-10 victory over U. of New England (Maine) in record-breaking fashion on opening game of spring break trip

MESA, Ariz. — The Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team roared back from an 8-3 deficit to post a 15-10 victory over the University of New England in the opening game of its spring break trip to the desert on Monday night.
The Polar Bears also set multiple school records in the process.

The Game
- Junior Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) dished out a season-high five assists to become ONU's all-time points leader with 123 in her career.
- Senior Chloe Millican (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) would pick up the win in goal to break the school record with her 16th career victory in net.
- Sophomores Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) poured in a career-tying six goals and Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson) added four goals and two assists for ONU.
- Sophomore Elena Martin (Youngstown/Canfield) added a hat trick with three goals.
- Senior Emma Perry (Pickerington/North) scored for ONU just 38 seconds in, but New England answered with five consecutive goals to lead 5-1 nine minutes into the contest.
- The lead was 7-2 early in the second quarter when Kocik scored off an assist from Burden with 12:00 left in the period to stop the run.
- Trailing 8-3, Ohio Northern exploded for six consecutive goals over the next 15 minutes to lead 9-8 with 10:07 left in the third.
- The Nor'Easters scored just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter to trim the lead to 11-10.
- But the Polar Bear defense would shut out UNE the rest of the way.
- Kocik would score three consecutive goals in a 4:54 span to increase the lead to 14-10 and Martin would secure her hat trick with her third goal of the night at the 5:43 mark to wrap up the scoring.
- In all, Ohio Northern would outscore New England 12-2 over the final 42 minutes of the game to record the victory.
- UNE led 5-2 after the first period and 8-5 at halftime.
Notables
- Burden is now first all-time in ONU history with 123 career points. She is also ONU's all-time career leader with 73 assists and is eighth with 50 career goals.
- Northern's 5-2 start is also the best to begin a season in school history.
- Ohio Northern also extended its school record with their seventh consecutive game scoring 10 or more goals, breaking the mark set in 2019.
- This game is the seventh of an 8-game road trip to open the season for the Polar Bears.
- Head coach Margo Vandeveld is in her first season at Ohio Northern and has a 5-2 record, a winning percentage of .714.
