Jacobs, Knippen, Stahler score in double figures as Women’s Basketball defeats Capital

ADA — Seniors Lexi Jacobs (Wapakoneta) and Alissa Stahler (Lima/Shawnee) and sophomore Kasey Knippen (Ottoville) all scored in double figures to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 71-46 win over Capital at the ONU Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Capital falls to 4-16, 1-11.
Jacobs finished with a team-high 14 points for ONU to go with 11 from Knippen and 10 from Stahler.
Sophomore Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) tallied a team-leading five rebounds, while junior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led ONU with six assists and four steals.
Freshman Layla Dials (Willard) and senior Kate Iliff (Lorain/Steele) joined Knippen in playing well off the bench, scoring eight and seven points, respectively.
Laney Murphy led Capital in scoring with nine points to go with eight each from Brooke Ommert and Maddie Dougoud.
The Polar Bears jumped out to a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter spurred by a pair of 3-pointers from Knippen.
ONU held Capital to single-digit scoring in the second quarter as well, outscoring the Comets 13-7 in the period to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.
Dials made all three of her field goals, including a 3-pointer, and added a free throw for eight points in the third quarter as the Polar Bears took a 46-31 edge into the fourth.
Iliff sparked ONU in the final quarter, making a 3-pointer as part of her 3-for-3 showing from the floor for seven points.
Ohio Northern made 22-of-52 field goals for 42.3% and was 9-of-27 from 3-point range for 33.3%, while the Comets made 17-of-47 field goals for 36.2% and were 6-of-12 from beyond the arc for 50.0%.
The Polar Bears were 18-of-24 from the foul line for 75.0% while CU was 6-of-11 for 54.4%.
ONU out-rebounded CU by a 34-28 margin and forced 19 Comet turnovers.
Northern returns to the court on Wednesday at 7 p.m. hosting Ohio Athletic Conference foe No. 12 Baldwin Wallace at the ONU Sports Center.
