Softball splits doubleheader with Calvin (Mich.)

ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team split a doubleheader with Calvin (Mich.) on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. ONU fell 7-2 in game one, but took the nightcap 14-12.

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (16-18 Overall), Calvin (20-12 Overall).
• Venue: Durbin-Hileman Stadium — Ada, Ohio.

Game 1 - L, 2-7

• Calvin scored three runs in the top of the first inning, one run in the second inning and three more in the sixth inning.
• In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Alaina Baughn (Greenville).
• Freshman Jaylee Fansler (Plainfield, Ind./Avon) scored on an error by the Knights to score their second run.
• Fansler went 2-for-3 to lead the Polar Bears offensively.
• Freshman Avery Neth (Williamsburg) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts.

Game 2 - W, 14-12

• Calvin scored one run in the top of the first inning.
• In the second inning, Northern scored 5 runs, including a 2-RBI double from junior Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta).
• The Polar Bears scored five more runs in the second inning, with Fansler clearing the bases with a 3-RBI triple to make the score 10-1.
• The Knights rallied in the fifth inning to score five runs.
• In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Ashley Lenser (Brookville) hit an RBI single and senior Taylor Hilty (Kettering/Fairmont) hit a 2-RBI single, making the score 13-6.
• CU scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
• In the bottom of the sixth, Fansler hit a solo homer to make the score 14-8.
• Calvin scored four runs in the top of the seventh, but ONU held on for the win.
• Sophomore Taylor Keck (Wadsworth) pitched a complete game with one strikeout.
• Fansler went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs to lead the Polar Bears.

Notables

• Ohio Northern is now 7-10 all-time against Calvin.
• Fansler had a 5-for-8 day with five RBIs and four runs.
• Lenser now has 103 strikeouts this season, which ranks tied for ninth-best in ONU history.
• Lenser is now second in ONU history with 343 career strikeouts and tied for third with 47 career victories in the circle.
• Lenser, Rosser and Wilson lead the team in batting through 34 games this season with averages of .413, .400 and .385, respectively.
• Ohio Northern is in its 58th season of softball. The Polar Bears are 1,012-698-4 all-time, a winning percentage of .591.
• Head coach Summer Collins is in her first season at Ohio Northern.
