WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team dropped a pair of pitchers' duels on day two of the team's annual spring break trip on Monday.
The Polar Bears (1-3 overall) fell 4-3 in 10 innings in the first game of the day to Emerson (Mass.) Monday morning and fell 3-1 to No. 20-ranked Babson (Mass.) on Monday afternoon.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles (2-1) scored three times in the top of the 10th inning to take a 4-1 lead.
But Northern rallied in the home half of the tenth when freshman Lainie Howell (Upper Sandusky/Riverdale) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Taylor Hilty (Kettering/Fairmont) and senior Lauren Walls (Grove City) scored on a ground ball by senior Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) to make it 4-3.
Junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) would then double to out runners on second and third, but ONU was unable to get the tying run across.
The second game of the day saw the Beavers (6-5) score three unearned runs to lead 3-0 after four innings.
Northern made it 3-1 when senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) singled home Hilty to make it 3-1.
The Polar Bears had chances to tie the game, but left seven runners on base in the final three frames.
The game was then delayed by 20 minutes in the top of the sixth inning.
Both of ONU's pitchers, senior Allie Bican (Solon) and sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville), pitched well in defeat with just one earned run allowed in the 16 innings of work.
Ohio Northern will continue its spring break trip on Tueday morning with a 9 am game against Benedictine (Ill.) and a 11:30 am game with Westminster (Pa.)
