Men's Basketball loses tight battle to Capital 69-64

ADA — The Ohio Northern men's basketball team loses in a tight battle against Capital at home 69-64 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Basics

• Records: Ohio Northern (10-9 overall, 4-8 OAC), Capital (7-12 overall, 4-8 OAC).
• Venue: ONU Sports Center — Ada, Ohio.

The Game

• Sophomores Carter Reese (Wetserville/North) and Theo Maag (Ottawa/Ottawa-Gandorf) led the Polar Bears with 15 points each.
• Junior Will Miller (Ottoville) pitched in 12 points.  
• McKane Finkenbine led the Comets with 17 points.
• Ohio Northern trailed 65-64 with 55 seconds left and had two possessions to go ahead, but the Capital defense held and kept the lead intact. 
• Two made free throws Se'Ron Calloway-White with :26 left in the game would extend the lead to 67-64.
• Miller would get a good look to tie it from three but would not be able to get the shot to fall. 
• Two more made free throws from Calloway would put the game on ice for Capital at 69-64. 
• Northern led at halftime 36-31.
• In a closely contested contest, neither team would lead by more than 7 points and neither team would have a run larger than 7 points. 
• There were 15 lead exchanges and the game was tied at 10 different times. 
• Ohio Northern was 21-of-55 from the floor for 38.2 percent and made 7-of-27 three-pointers for 25.9 percent, while Capital finished 22-of-47 from the field for 46.8 percent and 4-of-12 from three-point range for 33.3 percent.
• ONU made 15-of-19 free throws for 78.9 percent and CU was 21-of-32 from the foul line for 65.6 percent.
• The Comets out rebounded the Polar Bears 39-29.

• Capital leads the all-time series between the two schools is now 87-64.
• Miller is now ranked 20th in ONU history with 116 steals.
• Cunningham Jr. is ranked first in the conference in steals with 44 and assists with 107. 
• Ohio Northern is ranked 1st in the conference in assists per game (16.4) turnovers forced (15.3 tpg), and points per game allowed (68.1 ppg).
• Maag is ranked first on the OAC in field goal percentage, boasting a 63.0 percentage, and Cunningham Jr. is ranked seventh with a 55.3 percentage. 
• Ohio Northern continues its 114th season of varsity men's basketball and has a record of 1381-1084, a winning percentage of .560.
• Head coach Neal Young is in his third season at Ohio Northern with a 33-36 record.
