BEREA — Ohio Northern defeated No. 9-ranked Baldwin Wallace 5-3 in 11 innings before being eliminated by No. 12 Marietta 7-1 on day two of the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on a warm Friday afternoon at Fisher Field.
The third-seeded Polar Bears end their season with a 27-15 record.
Northern began the day with its victory over top-seeded Baldwin Wallace in an elimination game.
Freshman Chase Armstrong (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) smashed a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh to give Ohio Northern a 3-2 lead.
BW tied the game 3-all with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.
Northern then loaded the bases with two out in the top of the eighth, but could not push the go-ahead run across the plate.
The Polar Bears turned a base hit and four walks into a pair of runs in the top of the 11th inning.
Senior Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) led off the 11th with a single, senior Vinny Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) followed with a walk and two outs later sophomore Andrew Stechschulte (Findlay) drew a walk to load the bases.
Freshman Robbie Reed (Goshen, Ky./Trinity) drew a bases loaded walk to score Wenning and senior Nate Webb (Bath, Ind./Union County ) picked up a third consecutive walk to score Sclafani with an insurance run.
Senior Jack Hutchins (Bright, Ind./East Central) picked up the win in relief, improving to 7-2 on the season. He struck out six in 6.2 inning of work, allowing only two hits and one unearned run.
Baldwin Wallace was eliminated with a 31-10 record.
In ONU's second game of the day, second-seeded Marietta (33-10) scored in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Reed tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when he scored on a ground out by junior Logan Stevens (Plain City/Jonathan Alder).
MC regained the lead with a run in the third and went on top 5-1 with three more runs in the fourth frame.
The Pioneers scored insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings and held on for the win.
Fourth-seeded John Carroll (27-13) advanced into the finals with a 10-8 victory over Marietta on Friday morning.
The Pioneers and Blue Streaks will face off in the finals on Saturday morning at Noon. MC will need two victories to claim the tournament title, while JCU would eliminate Marietta with one win.
Stevens and Wenning each finished the day with four hits.
