ADA -- The Ohio Northern baseball team swept Kalamazoo (Mich.) 3-1, 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Wander Field in a non-conference twinbill.
The Polar Bears improve to 18-17 overall, while the Hornets fall to 22-10.
In Game 1, sophomore Austin Frey (Peoria, Aiz.,/Sunrose Mountain) threw eight shutout innings with five strikeouts to earn the win on the mound and improve to 2-2 on the year.
Junior All-American T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) picked up his NCAA-leading 12th and 13th saves of the season.
After freshman Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) and sophomore Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) got on base with a double and walk, respectively, the duo would each advance a base on a wild pitch.
From there a groundout from junior Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) would plate Thomas before Klinehoffer was able to score on a wild pitch and an error from the KC catcher to give Northern an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Shenefield was able to drive Thomas home from second base with a single down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.
In Game 2, Northern plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
With the bases loaded, freshman Scott Beaton (Novi, Mich.) had an RBI single, junior Jason Burkett (Maumee) drew a walk and junior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) hit a sac fly in consecutive at-bats.
Northern played add-on in the sixth when junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) singled home Shenefield to make it 4-1.
The Hornets would add one run in the top of the seventh to cut the gap to 4-2.
Kalamazoo made one more attempt to get back in the contest with a home run in the top of the ninth but Storer would once again slam the door and seal the game two victory.
Sophomore Jake Szendrey (North Canton/Hoover) earned the victory in game two as he struck out two batters in 2.2 innings of work.
Northern will return to action Saturday as it hosts Capital in its final home Ohio Athletic Conference twinbill of the season at 1 pm.
